Mission Impossible III

Impossible or Possible?

The Building Swing:
How fast was Ethan Hunt going when he reached the opposite building in Shanghai?
For this problem we will need to know the initial velocity in the Y direction, acceleration in the Y direction, and time.
Hunt began the swing at rest, meaning the initial velocity in the Y direction will be 0 m/s. If one ignores wind resistance, then Hunt's acceleration will be -9.8 m/s². The time it took Hunt to reach the opposite building is unclear, but we will assume it took about 6 s.

The Helicopter Chase:
How long did it take the enemies helicopter to hit the ground after it hit a windmill blade?
For this problem we will need to know the initial velocity in the Y direction, the final velocity in the Y direction, and the acceleration in the Y direction.
The helicopter was moving in the X direction, so one can assume its velocity in the Y direction was  0 m/s. The final velocity of the helicopter can only be estimated by the force with which it landed, which in this case suggests a very high speed, and we will assume the helicopter had a final velocity of 22 m/s. If the air resistance is ignored then the acceleration will equal -9.8 m/s².

The Base Jump:
How fast was Ethan Hunt going when he hit the ground after jumping from the building in Shanghai?
For this problem we will need to know the initial velocity in the Y direction, acceleration in the Y direction, and the time.
Hunt began the jump from rest, resulting in an initial velocity of 0 m/s. If the air resistance and other factors of jumping from a building wearing a parachute are overlooked then the acceleration will equal -9.8 m/s². The time will have to be estimated due to the lack of physical evidence, and one can assume it took Hunt 8 s to reach the ground.

  1. Good job having a question clearly in mind. That’s a great starting point. And you successfully identified some of the quantities you would actually need to analyze the scenes. Not too surprising you missed a few things; hopefully as we go through the course you’ll get better at this kind of thing.
